Crawling of the dead - VR Gameplay Valve Index
Not quite the amazing dungeon crawler I was hoping for. If we look back over the key features on Steam:
I didn't see any masterful sword play. I don't know why this line is here.
There was a story. There was an overload of exposition at the start of the game that didn't really tell us much or hook me into it. The voice acting was pretty good however the character being voiced was nowhere near likable. I kinda hated being them.
The only thing dark was the dungeon. The story focusing so much on the little sister was a bit creepy, not dark. It also wasn't very intriguing from what I saw.
The dungeons were procedurally generated. There was a very finite number of rooms available though so it did feel pretty repetitive. The lack of a map to keep track of where you were/have been would be a great addition here. Since the layout doesn't really make logical sense, it's very easy to get lost.
Ok. Crafting not done right. Um... The crafting was just tedious. Hammering for the sake of hammering. Waiting for the sake of waiting. Please look to A Township Tale to see weapon crafting "done right."
What was hardcore about the death mechanics other than that damn vignette I couldn't get rid of? I didn't notice any loss at all but maybe I was missing something. I never did figure out what the essence was supposed to be used for. Thinking about it now I probably should have trained with the dummy at some point. Oh well. It wouldn't have changed anything really. The difficulty of the mobs is one thing I liked.
Loot. There is none. You can pick up 3 things. Iron, gold, Essence. That's it. That's not loot. That's very basic crafting ingredients and what I believe to basically be experience points. Oh, and also the health potions you can't drink. Best loot ever!
Soul crushing was absolutely right on the money.
Crawling the Dead isn't outright bad. I did like the difficulty. The lighting and the voice acting. Whoever designed the look of the backpack UI did a decent job.
It's really just overpriced for what it is and probably over-fluffed their steam page a bit too much for my taste. Also, if I turn off the vignette, turn off the damn vignette. Don't turn off most of it but still leave it in a little bit...
The inconsistent interactions with the world didn't help either. There were so many swords that could have been used...
It's really just a collection of a lot of little things that make this game a not recommended for me.
