I am using Blender 2.79.
I create a plane, subdivide it many times, add 2 empties, add two simple deform modifiers and link them to the empties
set the empties rotations in order to wrap the plane into a perfect sphere.
I then use the UV image editor to map a blue marble earth image onto the sphered plane. I then apply the simple deform modifiers, adjust the lighting and sphere positioning.
