Creature Shock | Sega Saturn Playthrough | Real hardware
This is a very unique game made by Argonaut, a British company responsible for making the FX chip for the SNES which enabled 3D games like Star Fox and Stunt Race FX.
This is a bit of a step down in quality but you can see they were really trying to push the 3D technology of the time. Unfortunately, at the time, they thought the way to go way through FMV graphics because real time 3D graphics still looked bad. They definitely succeeded in making a great looking game. It’s very intense and haunting and the enemy design is terrifying. It gives the feel of the Alien movies where you feel very isolated and genuinely fearful of what’s around the corner because there are so many different enemies that you will have to learn how to defeat or they will kill you and you have to start again.
This fear is also brought by the knowledge that you have to do all the walking down corridors again if you die. The levels are quite long and it is so easy to get lost, that restarting is a massive chore. Especially when you get to an enemy near the end of the level and you don’t know for sure if you will defeat it, even when you know how to beat it. This is due to the shooting mechanic where you have to move an aiming cursor on the screen which you can easily miss your opportunity to get a hit in. I don’t think you can even use a light gun in this game. The aiming is very hit and miss (pardon the pun). You also need to keep an eye on your ammo because if you keep blasting, you will overheat and can’t shoot anymore. Because of this, you really need to know where all the power ups are hidden in the levels and get them before attempting the level boss.
It’s also so easy to get lost in this game. I used a map that I found online which told me exactly where to go, and I still kept taking wrong turnings. I don’t know how I would have managed by memory and trial and error alone.
Although this game can really drag, it is rewarding to come back for more. I really did want to keep going to see what the next level was like. It was a relief to see that the last 2 levels were really short after the first 2 being so long, but the last boss was really hard. I think there is a level missing on the Saturn version. I’m guessing this down to disc space because it has a really strange disc swapping mechanic where level 2 and 4 is on disc 2 and level 1 and 3 are on disc 1. I guess they really had to cram all that full motion video to fit on 2 discs.
It would have been more user friendly and inviting to make shorter levels all the way, instead of making the first 2 levels the longest and hardest in the game.
Over all, this is a really boring and confusing game, but also very atmospheric and absorbing. It’s better than the vast majority of FMV games and I enjoyed playing it.
