Crimzon Clover is considered unique by its use of a Break system, in which, when the bomb gauge is fully powered up, can be activated to unleash a brief period of super powerful shot that cover the majority of the screen and cancels most bullets upon activation, and can be charged twice for the activation of double break mode, which is an even more powerful version of break.
It is also unique in the way it has separate power-ups released upon boss shoot down, allowing for differing play styles to be adopted.
The game also utilizes a lock-on, which slows the player down when being charged, and when released, unleashes various types of damage upon the targeted enemy. Finally, the game uses star shaped point items which can be collected for score amd win an extra life.

The gamer controls are:

Joystick to move the craft.

Button A for Shot
Auto-fires the player's primary weapon.
If the player is shooting while B (Lock-On) is held, their shot range will narrow closer to the center.

Button B for Lock-On
Hold to open lock-on field. Release to fire homing lasers at targets.
Movement speed is reduced while Locking-On.
A multiplier will activate based on number of lock-ons.

Button C for Bomb / Break
Releases a Bomb that deletes all bullets on screen and deals heavy damage to on-screen enemies.
Using a bomb will increase the amount of Break Gauge required to use another.
In Original and Unlimited, pressing C with a full Break Gauge will activate Break Mode or Double Break Mode.

There are four separate game modes:

First is Boost mode, which works with a rank system. Break cannot be activated, but is instead triggered by filling the gauge up fully. The break gauge is also tied to bullet speed which increases in three intervals (0%-49%, 50%-99%, and 100%), causing the game to increase in difficulty as power increases. Point blank shooting enemies in full break causes a mass of point items to appear.

The second is Original mode, which uses the standard gameplay mechanics, with no modifications to the basic break, bomb, and life system. Break Mode, and features a "Break Rate" in addition to the lock-on multiplier. Break Rate increases by shooting enemies or locking on to large groups. When in Break Mode, the Break Rate temporarily doubles, and when Double Break Mode is accessed the Rate temporarily doubles yet again. Deaths and bombs deplete the Break Gauge.

Third, there is Unlimited mode, which is identical to original except performing a shoot down with fully charged lock on will release a shower of point items and the difficulty is greatly increased.

Last but not least Time Attack mode, where lives are removed but you play a level that needs to be completed as fast as possible, multiple kills reward with a score bonus.
The timer stars at 3 minutes and the game speed is doubled, at end of the run you will receive a rank based of how well you did. There is also unique bosses in this mode.

There are three shot types. Type I, which is available from the start, and has a slow speed, but higher damage, Type II, which has a "rolling" style of shot and higher speed, and Type Z (which has a sprite identical to the Crimson Heart boss), which has a very wide and very high damaging shot.
