Following the events of Guilty Gear XX, many a character enters into direct conflict with the Post-War Administration Bureau and the director of one of its branches, the amoral scientist Crow, who hopes to perfect his Imitation Series-version of Justice, this are the major differences in this version:

-The HUD is changed: a different colored health bar since the first game and X (green HP bars indicate full health while the yellow color is for below that amount), a different colored Burst gauge, new timer display, and a tweaked combo counter mechanic that shows invalid combos.

-Brand new Force Breaks are added in for a majority of characters such as Sol, Axl, Testament, and Ky.

-Several special skills/command normals, especially the characters' original command normals in previous games, are re-added (Ky and Jam's classic Right + Heavy Slash and Testament's Down + Heavy Slash from Guilty Gear X, now being their Down Right + Heavy Slash).

-A majority of characters like Johnny, Venom and Baiken gain moves that are from past games and mainly their EX versions, such as Johnny and Venom gaining an extra Overdrive from said alternate versions of themselves, and Baiken gaining one of her EX version's moves as a Force Break. This also applies to the aforementioned Ky, Testament, Jam.
Thus, old moves used in their EX versions come to light for their default versions and reworks.

-Kliff and Justice are made tournament legal. Changes to Kliff involve more of his moves being more likely to backfire on himself, and Justice loses most of her mobility which she only regains when using her new Omega Shift Overdrive.

-A number of characters with unique mechanics now have a quality-of-life timer gauge as indicators moved to just above their Tension gauge (e.g. A.B.A in Moroha Mode and Zappa in Raoh mode). Meanwhile, Eddie's already-pre-existing timer gauge for his summon is moved to the same spot above his own Tension gauge as well (as it was originally below his own Burst Gauge).

-Previous Heavy Slash palettes on Color Set 1 are replaced with palettes that reference popular characters from other works, and the Dust palettes reference characters from Arc System Works' other popular fighting game series, BlazBlue. In the arcade version, the old Heavy Slash and Dust palettes take the place of the Gold and Shadow colors.

-Robo-Ky's default theme, which had previously been "Under Construction" ever since Guilty Gear XX ♯Reload, is changed to "Holy Orders?".
Other tweaks involve bug fixes and motion changes.
