Crisis Core is a game that is dear to many of the folk who had a PSP. I did not, and was always rather jealous that folk were able to play this considering my attachment to the original FFVII. It was only when Square Enix decided to restore and reimagine this game that I got the chance to do so. It soon becomes apparent that this is a game (much like Advent Children before it) is a rose-tinted glasses situation. Don't get me wrong - it's got some really excellent moments and a fun combat system, but for everything it does right - it does two things wrong.

The narrative seems a compelling idea with a lot of potential - but unfortunately the pure cheddar dialogue and cringeworthy humour bog this down and almost every character is unlikeable and irritable - not least Zack. Its eems Square went out of their way to cast the most annoying voice actor to play almost the most annoying character (that honour is reserved for Genesis). There are some excellent moments like reconstructing the events in Nibelheim or the conclusion of the game, but they are few and far between.

The missions and areas suited the PSP as bitesize so they could be played on the go, but they are repetetive and empty with not too much to admire. 300 missions across 4 maps is downright tedious and boring for a completionist. Nobuo Uematsu's absence from the soundtrack is noticeable too.

It's not all average to underwhelming - the combat is soemthing to shout about. It's fast, furious and fun. Dodging, slashing, item use and casting are skills that you must pick up pretty quickly as the enemies become more of a challenge. The established materia system allows you to carefully tailor a loadout to each fight - and fusing new materia is a wonderful idea in order to make your character stronger. The limit break system is like a slot machine and can completely change the battles landscape - as character cards that match will unleash a special attack, and numbers can be used for buffs, levelling and materia growth. The superboss took me to task and was a real rewarding battle for the 300 odd missions that preceded it.

All in all, an experience that may have been best suited to superfans and one that could have remained on the PSP.
