The 500 Greatest Video Games of All Time - Cave Story+ - Part 2
One of the reason's I'm enjoying this list is that it forces me to play games I may otherwise not touch. Cave Story was a one man project developed by Daisuke Amaya in his spare time whilst working other jobs. This was an incredible undertaking as he designed the levels, enemies, story, music, weapons and gameplay - in a salute to the old school games he grew up on like Mario and Metroid. The result cannot be understated, as the finished product went on to be critically acclaimed and amassed a following equivalent to a AAA game. No adverts, no promo, nada. It inspired the Metroidvania resurgence, and is regarded as some as the most important indie game of all time. No Cave Story? You can likely forget Celeste, Super Meat Boy, Hollow Knight, Ori.... the list goes on.
It's a challenging platformer that sees you controlling an amnesiac robot in a quest to save the Mimiga (a rabbit like race) from being transformed into war machines by the evil doctor - who intends to wipe out the surface and it's human population in a bid to control everything. You meet a series of colourful characters on the way, who will aid your quest. You get several power ups such as different weapons, jetpacks and shields that you can level up by collecting crystals - and you get levelled down when you take a hit. For it's 8-10 hour campaign, the challenges and engaging narrative will draw you in - and it's something I'll play off stream.
