0So, do ya think You are a OGVR Gamer do you? Well, sorry brah, I think I have you beat, by about 30 years or so. ;)
Well, we all have our First VR experience, some of us just go way wayyyyyyy wayyyyyy back. This is Mine, Dactyl Nightmare, I played this game in about 1993, when it was at the large summer fair here in Vancouver, cost $20 for 5 mins, and it was, More than amazing to say the least, and basically completely blew and destroyed my mind all at once in just 5 mins, the image that appears at 7:16 shows the exact platform version of this game that I played in 1993.
What you see here is a near perfect recreation of that Original VR game made in UNITY engine. Dactyl Nightmare, a 2 player vs game, in an arena made up of several checkered play areas, connected by stairs to a central area, with Green Pterodactyls circling above.
For me, it was life changing, and I had already been chasing VR for several years at that point, read thru the JPL papers, read thru all the books, watched all the movies and footage, drawn up my own ideas and highschool day dreams of what could be, and when I heard they were going to have a REAL VR booth with The Game!!! I was on my way first day, I had to have a taste of the Future of Games! and This was the First, and Only way Anyone outside a military research lab could try out this Magical thing we had all heard about, Virtual Reality.
And trust me, in the days of SNES and GENESIS being the Ultimate home gaming systems, 2d gaming was the Only gaming at that point, THIS, was mind boggling, Nothing even came close to this at that time, a Fully 3D world, that you could move within, it was TRON realized, Completely. Heads were exploding left and right over this sudden Fact.
I will NEVER EVER FORGET the moment I put on the MASSIVE HMD...and moved my head, and with the massive lag, the world followed...it was like a hallucination, it was like LSD without the tense neck muscles...and then it happened.....
Without thinking...I raised my hand...and to my right, I SAW MY HAND MOVING.....IN VR space...EXACTLY as you see in this clip...from that split second forward, I KNEW, VR would one day be all I could dream it might be, and more. From that day, my entire life has been dedicated to getting to know all about the technology, to learn every I could about CGI and 3D graphics, and I never stopped that pursuit, I became a CGI artist in film and television, I learned to create and do all that would be needed for VR development, and now, here we are, ready to go, 30 years later....
