John Romero left id Software after the creation of Quake as he frequently clashed over id's future direction. He co-founded his own game company, Ion Storm, to begin developing the game Daikatana. Announced for a Christmas 1997 release, Romero found the amateur team he had could not keep up with the ever evolving technology, so Daikatana was pushed for a March 1998 release. Moving the game to a different engine proved to be a much longer process than anticipated and this was finished in January 1999. After the release of a controversial poster where Romero proclaims, "He's about to make you his bitch" and an E3 Demo that was technically unsound, the public eye for the game waned. Daikatana was then dropped the next year to commercial and critical failure.
