Indy Heat featured four-player capability, and was similar in gameplay to Super Off Road. Players earned money based on their race finishing positions, which was spent on improving their car. Before the start of each race, including the first one, you can spend your reserve money to upgrade the car.
Money can also be increased by spending credits. There are six possible upgrades, each increasable to multiple levels: new turbo charges, brakes to slow down faster, tires for road holding, mechanics to speed up pit stops, less fuel consumption to reduce the need for stops, and engine for speed. There is also the option of letting the computer automatically choose which upgrades to purchase.

There are 14 tracks in the arcade version, all of which are based on actual IndyCar racetracks:

Phoenix: 8 Laps.

Vancouver: 5 Laps.

Indianapolis: 8 Laps.

Long Beach: 5 Laps.

Detroit: 5 Laps.

Pocono: 8 Laps.

Cleveland: 5 Laps.

East Rutherford/Meadowlands: 5 Laps.

Toronto: 5 Laps.

Michigan: 8 Laps.

Lexington/Mid Ohio: 5 Laps.

Elkhart Lake: 5 Laps.

Cook's/Monterey: 5 Laps.

Denver: 5 Laps.

The player has limited fuel, and will run slowly if supplies run out, and the car can be damaged, although both are repairable in the pits.
