Having only just recently started doing Dark Souls 2 invasions I was caught by surprised the first few times a Seed of a Giant Tree was used against me. Since there's no indicator on the HUD like there is in DS3 when a host uses one the only way you know one is active is if you see the particle effect on the host's body and by the pve attacking you.

Luckily in making my character I became quite experienced in ignoring the pve as it was just more time efficient to run past them in most areas than it was to fight each one at the starting soul level of the knight class. Dragon Aerie was an exception though, that door is immensely difficult to open while dealing with any pve much less a horde of angry dragon bros.
