Chilled and Nanners played this game on Launch day...before there were a lot of guides on how to play the co-op with your friends. Even after we spent two hours trying to get into the same game...we were still hit issues...
SIDE NOTE
We did use a password (It was Turtle) but we actually had better results connecting NOT using a password.
We did have all of the right online settings enabled. (Hence why we were able to eventually connect)
If a person was not in Ember form it SEEMED like their summoning sign they placed was not showing up.
HELLO Hero! I see you are interested in Playing Dark Souls 3 Co-op with a friend. Well...let me explain to you how to do that! But before you begin, here are some things we learned...
When you die, you have to re-summon your friend which is hit or miss at the moment. Their summoning sign may never appear leading to a 20 minute wait every death (And this is Dark Souls, so you die a lot) Completely frustrating even with the password setting.
After a Certain number of Deaths you lose your "Ember" Which means you can not play online until you find a new one, or buy a new one. The vendor only seems to sell 3 and they cost 2500 souls. So try and conserve. Otherwise that's another huge wait...So if you are looking to just have fun in co op with a friend. THIS IS NOT THE GAME FOR YOU. Nanners and I got frustrated of all the waiting. We didn't care that it was hard, we just wanted to play together without waiting 20 minutes every death.
Assuming you are okay with both of those...Great! Let me tell you how to begin...
To play Dark Souls 3 Co op with a friend you have to beat the first boss. The giant guy you remove the sword from who then proceeds to kick the shit out of you. Both you and your friend will have to do this. After you defeat him you will be granted an ember. You will see your character on fire. This now means you can play online.
Head to Firelink Shrine (Up the Path after you defeat the boss) And talk to the old woman in the hallway on the lower level. You can purchase a summoning sign/stone for 500 souls. You can also purchase a new ember if you lose yours for 2500.
After being in ember mode, and having a summoning stone, head to the bonfire in the Firelink Shrine and teleport to the next area. I believe its called Lothric something. Once you get there you can summon your friend (He does not need a summoning sign/stone to join) BUT he does need to be near the same bonfire/area you are putting your summoning sign/stone down at.
Put your summoning sign/stone on the ground. Hopefully now your friend will see this sign in their game. If not, have them teleport back and forth between the lothric location, and the firelink shrine. Hopefully after enough teleports they will see yours and can join you.
Of course now with that being said...the above two things I mentioned first still apply. If you die, lose your ember, or any of the above...you will have to redo it all (Besides beating the first boss, he will stay dead)
