CORRECTION: Dark Souls 3 indeed has 8-directional rolling...tested in DkS1 for comparison. Sorry for the confusion!

THEORY - Backstab Failures: https://gifs.com/gif/KRB8nP It seems that the Greatsword may not have had instant backstabs, while smaller weapons could. I only extensively tested the window with my fist on immobile enemies. If this is true, it'd make perfect sense. A dagger can be stabbed into a back instantly, while a giant weapon like a Greatsword requires a wind-up, and no one will sit around for that to happen. This could make daggers and other crit-focused weapons more viable without over-buffing them like in DkS2.
