Whenever I see a phantom return home after watching a group fighting an invader I like to think that they've got some experience being on the other side or aren't looking to help unless progress into the level is being made. It's incredibly rare to see though so that's just my growing speculation as to why they don't join in from whenever it has happened. If they had to "pause" the game I'd imagine they would just return home asap instead of taking a moment before doing so.
