I am generally of the opinion that you shouldn't provide too much mercy to inexperienced hosts as it's best to learn by doing. When I find an inexperienced host who isn't acting toxic or looking for a victory at any cost though I want to encourage that kind of player to persevere. I won't black crystal or jump off a cliff because I want to reset their invasion cooldown timer properly (chances are an unforgiving invader will take my place within moments if I did) without giving them false expectations (they should not expect invaders to let them live). Phantoms, especially blue spirits, get no such consideration though because they've got nothing to lose.
