Dark Souls: Archthrones Demo - All Bosses Blind Playthrough - Melee Build
I really enjoyed this demo, it’s one of the most high effort overhaul mods ever. It really does feel like an entirely new game even with familiar areas and boss movesets. Carthus of the Sands was especially impressive, it’s like they turned Slave Knight Gael’s arena into an Elden Ring-style open world area. Cathedral of Bloodborne was my favorite looking area and I love that they added all the goofy little alien dudes. It definitely feels like Demon’s Souls in some annoying ways however, some boss runbacks are stupidly long and bonfires feel rare. Upgrade materials are also hard to come by and there’s a severe lack of Estus Shards. It is still a demo so all of these are subject to change, but it did make the demo playthrough a little more tedious than it needed to be.
Bosses are… a mixed bag. At best they’re an excellent mix of multiple previous bosses, Janara One-Eye is one of my favorites and she’s a mix of Sekiro’s True Monk and DS3’s Champion Gundyr. At worst they’re just a copy and pasted moveset with either nothing changed or the changes only worsen the fight. Angel of Gurtrude is just the Crucible Knight 2v1 from Auriza Hero’s Grave but they always stay next to each other, no longer take turns, and even teleport before using their special moves back to back and it breaks your lock-on. I almost never parry in Dark Souls but this fight just wasn’t worth my time. Saint Klimt was another disappointing fight, I have no idea why you’d choose The One Reborn as a phase 2 to Godskin Apostle. Aldrich wasn’t any better, the magic spam is worse and the boss itself is just a sludge pile that doesn’t really do anything. Kremmel, God of Struggle was a really cool spectacle but the fight is way too long unless you want to hit trade with all the knight adds. I loved the phase 2 tho, Artorias is always a treat to fight. Heide Phoenix is a joke. I don’t have anything else for that, it’s just worse Sanctuary Guardian. It flies around way too much and I genuinely have no idea when the devs expect me to hit the damn thing in phase 2.
There’s some other new mechanics that I didn’t use very often like powerstancing and perfect guarding. I didn’t experiment with many powerstancing options and the perfect guard felt inconsistent, but that could’ve just been lack of practice. If whatever you’re perfect guarding with doesn’t have 100% physical negation you’ll still take chip damage, even if you do the perfect guard successfully which seems kinda dumb to be honest. I look forward to the final release but I don’t know for sure if I’ll do any challenge runs until the mod is complete. So far it’s looking like that’s a no but I hope they change my mind.
