Darksiders III is a hack and slash action-adventure video game developed by American studio Gunfire Games and published by THQ Nordic.
The game takes place during the century War is imprisoned by the Charred Council at the beginning of Darksiders I and the events of Darksiders II. It begins with a retelling of the origins of how the four horsemen War, Death, Strife & Fury came to serve the Charred Council and how they were granted their roles as of the New Pact created at the end of the Nephillim War. The Council also deems Fury the most impatient and unpredictable of the horsemen, when she interrupts them assigning roles to the horsemen.
Following the opening moments of Darksiders I, War is blamed for prematurely bringing about the apocalypse and apprehended for his crime. With War imprisoned, Death missing (as he attempts to clear War's name), and Strife attending to other matters, Fury is summoned by the Charred Council and assigned to hunt down and destroy the Seven Deadly Sins, who have escaped imprisonment by the Charred Council and are now on Earth. Fury agrees to these terms so long as when she succeeds, she is made the leader of the horsemen. The Council agree to these terms and direct her to a place call Haven to begin her search but allocate a female Watcher to her to ensure her obedience. Before she leaves, War pleas for forgiveness of a transgression he made towards Fury in the past, tries to assert his own innocence and warns her of forces conspiring against them (none of which she acknowledges). [1][2]
Arriving on Earth, Fury soon runs into Envy, defeating and trapping her in a talisman Envy possesses to absorb power from the other sins. The talisman also serves as a radar, emanating a hum and glow whenever another of the seven are close by. Entering Haven, Fury encounters the demon merchant, Vulgrim, who offers items in exchange for souls and also echoes War's sentiments of someone or something manipulating the horseman in a grander scheme. She also encounters a group of Makers and the humans (the most notable being the Maker, Ulthane Blackhammer, and human, Jones) who are helping humans who have survived the apocalypse and question Fury's purpose in the war. Fury dismisses their words, stating she does not care but agrees to transport any humans she finds to them, using an artifact known as The Bridge in exchange for Ulthane upgrading her weapon. As a token of good faith, Ulthane gives her the location of Wrath, who is residing in the Nether.
Arriving in the Nether, Fury finds Wrath killing multiple angels. Fury battles Wrath but is distracted when her steed, Rampage, is summoned and dies (having been stabbed with angelic weapons by an unknown assailant). This distraction allows Wrath to impale her with an angel javelin, informing her that the more she fights the stronger he gets. Using the broken javelin that impaled her, Fury manages to seemingly kill Wrath by impaling him through his helmet's visor, but the effort causes her to fall unconscious.
When Fury awakes, she encounters the Lord of the Hollows, a powerful entity within the Hollows that wields power to completely release both weary Angels and Demons to from the cycle of life, death and rebirth of the Well of Souls. The Hollow Lord attempts to inform Fury that she is being manipulated by the Charred Council for their machinations, going so far as to call her ignorant and blind to their plans and lies. Though Fury denies it, the Lord of the Hollows nonetheless aids her by giving her the powers of elemental hollows (to enhance her combat abilities) and instructs her to hunt down the demon Abraxis and return Abraxis' soul to him.
As Fury takes one sin after another, sealing them in Envy's talisman, the Lord of Hollows continues to endow her with new hollows to aid in her mission. She encounters the leader of the angels on earth, Usiel, demanding an answer for Rampage's death. Usiel claims to have no knowledge of the slaughter but strikes a deal with Fury. He reveals to Fury that the Sin, Lust, has been resurrecting dead angels with power gained through an unknown demonic source.
