Red Dead Redemption 2[a] is a Western-themed action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games.
Following a botched ferry heist in 1899, the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee Blackwater and evade pursuing law enforcement. To fund their escape, Dutch has the gang rob a train belonging to the wealthy oil magnate Leviticus Cornwall. In retribution, Cornwall hires the Pinkerton Detective Agency, headed by Agents Milton and Ross, to apprehend the gang. The gang is forced to repeatedly move their camp to avoid capture. Together, Arthur and the gang perform numerous jobs and heists to keep the gang funded as Dutch continually promises one final heist that will achieve financial security and eventually freedom.
A deadly altercation and bank heist in the farming town of Valentine leads the gang to move to the southern state of Lemoyne. There, they learn of two warring families, the Grays and Braithwaites, potentially hoarding gold. Dutch aims to play the families against each other, but his actions are discovered leading to the murder of gang member Sean by the Grays, and the kidnapping of John's son, Jack, by the Braithwaites. The gang attacks the Braithwaites, burning their estate to the ground, and learning that Jack was given to Italian crime lord Angelo Bronte, who resides in the city of Saint Denis. Bronte returns Jack to the gang, but tasks them with several illicit jobs. After Bronte deliberately leads them into a trap, Dutch rushes the gang into a poorly-planned bank robbery in Saint Denis. The Pinkertons intervene which results in the deaths of Hosea and Lenny, and John's arrest and imprisonment. Dutch, Arthur, Bill, Javier and Micah meanwhile escape the city via a tanker ship heading to Cuba.
A torrential storm sinks the tanker, and the men become lost at sea. They wash ashore the isle of Guarma and become embroiled in a civil war between the tyrannical owners of the islands sugar plantations and the enslaved local population. On the island, Arthur witnesses as Dutch begins to demonstrate more extreme and violent behaviour, culminating in him murdering an elderly female guide out of fear of her betraying them. The gang successfully aids the revolution against the plantation owners, and secures transport back to the United States.
The group eventually reunite with the rest of the gang, but continue to run into trouble. Dutch obsesses over one last heist that will allow them to achieve their dream of freedom, but insists that they must wait before breaking John out of prison. Arthur and Sadie disobey Dutch and rescue John, and Dutch begins to doubt Arthur's loyalty, in part facilitated by the manipulations of Micah who has eagerly taken on Hosea's role as Dutch's right hand man. Dutch eventually seeks vengeance against Bronte, kidnapping him with the gang and then feeding him to an alligator. While Arthur remains loyal to Dutch, he grows increasingly disillusioned with the ever-deteriorating ethos of Dutch. In addition, Arthur discovers that he has contracted tuberculosis following an earlier altercation with diseased farmer Thomas Downes, giving him only a short time to live. Faced with his own mortality, Arthur begins to reflect on his actions and how to protect the gang after he is gone.
The gang fights off a Pinkerton assault of the camp, but Dutch becomes increasingly paranoid that a gang member has betrayed them, giving away their location and causing the failure many of their heists. After moving location again, Dutch decides to manipulate a local Native American tribe into a conflict with the United States Army to cause a distraction that will draw attention away from the gang, which should allow them to finally escape. Several members of the gang become disillusioned and gradually leave, while Dutch and Micah arrange one final heist of an Army payroll train. While preparing for the heist, Arthur convinces John that he must leave the gang and start a new life for his family. Arthur's loyalty to Dutch breaks when he again seeks vengeance, this time against Cornwall, abandons John during the heist, and then refuses to rescue John's partner Abigail. Arthur and Sadie again disobey Dutch, rescue Abigail, kill Agent Milton, and learn that Micah has been working as an informant for the Pinkertons since his return from Guarma.
