0Daxter stands tall when it comes to graphics and gameplay, it looks and plays just like a PS2 title.
The story in Daxter takes place before Jack II, during the years his bro, Jack was imprisoned. Now you have to save the city from bugs. It doesn’t sound fancy, but believe me, the specific humor of Daxter really spices up everything in the game, and makes you want to play more.
A nice touch is that even though the story is linear, you can still return to the locations visited before, thus giving you the ability to free roam. If you decide to free roam, there aren’t really many things to do except to collect Metal Bug gems or Precursor Orbs that you missed when first playing the game.
During combat, Daxter uses a flyswatter and a insecticide sprayer, which he can use as a flamethrower too and also boost himself up in the air to fly a little. The gameplay is extremely smooth and the characters have a lot of animations. The game just looks and feels right. The combat is fluid and varied, like the rest of the gameplay. You don’t do the same thing but in different locations like in other games, you get stealth parts, of bike chases too, and interesting boss fights. Even the platforming is fun.
Another nice touch is that you get minigames, you can access them when Daxter goes to sleep. They are just press the right button at the right time games, but they are creative and fun.
Also the checkpoint system is very nicely done. The checkpoints are so close one to another that you only need to pass a small fraction and your data is saved.
Another incredible thing about the game is that it barely has loading times. And for such a game you would expect a lot of loadings to take place, but it’s the contrary, the loadings are fast and rare.
The level design is eye catching in any of the levels. Ready at Dawn, the game company that made God of War, did it again, releasing an amazing looking game that has incredible gameplay.
