DayZ Mod - A new beginning: DayZ 1.7.1
The latest version for the DayZ mod was released today (1.7.1), followed by an emergency hotfix a few hours later, and others in the following days. The changelog is here (stats.six-updater.net/mods/changelog/84950cc2-8d47-11e1-baaa-001517bd964c), but I think it can be summarized in 3 main points:
- You start the game with fewer items (and no weapons)
- Zombies can see you and hear you at ranges and positions they could not before
- Zombies can't follow you if they lose line of sight (so if you outrun them and hide, they can't find you like they used to), or attack through walls.
Also, a lot of players (me included) seemed to have problems with the old characters and ended up having to respawn (and I had over 300 kills, as you can see in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1f9m0GtPSs).
The new version provides with some interesting opportunities and new gameplay strategies.
I spawned west of Elektro with only one bandage, a box or painkillers and a flashlight (which I never use anyway) inside my Patrol Pack. I immediately noticed that the audio and visual level indicators showed more bars than before. As I made my way away from the beach, I arrived at a gas station, got spotted (02:48), ran for it, and was able to lose my attackers by crossing through a warehouse (04:10).
I continued towards the city and visited quite a few buildings in it, being spotted a few times along the way, but always coming out on top of it (either by hiding or fighting). If you don't want to watch the entire video, I would recommend checking out the sequences that start at 08:33, 14:41 and 17:45, so you can properly see some of the things I tried.
I managed to gather some really nice items along the way too, and ended up with an M1911, Lee Enfield, ALICE Pack, Hunting Knife, Watch, Hatchet, Matchbox, food and drinks. Not bad for a first run in the new version. All I need now are binoculars, a map and a compass, and I'm ready to head inland again.
NOTE: I had a bit of trouble getting this to work. This is what I did (I have the STEAM version of the games)
1) Updated the mod files via SIX Updater (you can also download them here http://dayzmod.com/downloads.php)
2) Installed the latest beta for ARMA II (can be found here http://www.arma2.com/beta-patch.php) and followed the instructions in this post http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=9314 or in this one http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2728714 (basically install the mod, replace the .exe, edit the launch parameters on STEAM).
3) Joined a server that had "1.7.1.1" in it's name.
4) I respawned (otherwise known as killing yourself).
