The game features an open world game played from a first-person perspective, and focuses on melee combat with zombies, vehicular combat, and various role-playing elements. The Banoi game world is very large and includes an interactive beach/resort area, a city and a jungle.
Unlike other zombie games with post-apocalyptic themes, Dead Island focuses more on melee combat instead of firefights and therefore melee weapons are the best weapon in the game. There are a couple of firearms that can be purchased from merchants on the island or if the player completes a quest. The weapons in the game can also be upgraded and modified to make them better. To modify a weapon the player must find the following: a workbench, a build list, spare parts and a weapon. Each weapon also has a quality level identified by its color: such as Common (white), Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Unique (violet), and Exceptional (orange).
The game features an easy-to-use upgrade system that helps the player tinker with their game character's traits and abilities. Experience points, which the player obtains from defeating a number of zombies or completing various missions, can be used to improve the game character's Fury, Combat, and Survival attributes. Each of these traits has its own set of upgrades.
The regular zombies in the game are mostly sluggish and weak, but there are many more dangerous types of zombies, such as Infected, floater, Ram, Butcher and Suicider zombies, each with their own unique abilities and strengths.
There are quite a few refuges and strongholds on the island, such as a lighthouse or a church where the player can enter to obtain weapons and talk to other survivors. You will also encounter hostile territories on the island full of bandits.
You can choose to play as one of 4 game characters in the game:
Purna: a former police officer from Sydney. Weapons expert.
Logan: a former football star. Throw expert. Throws much better than the others.
Sam B: a popular rap star. "Bluntweapon expert" ie. best with heavier weapons such as hammers
Xian Mei: an employee of the Royal Palm Resort hotel on the island, born and raised in China. Knife expert
