Running the machine for at least 25 days will unlock Raidou in the original arcade Dead or Alive. Total runtime is stored in ram at 0x01d00000, which gets compared to value 0x20f57f (2,159,999 seconds) and sets flag 0x54fd76 to true when the counter is greater, unlocking Raidou. (0x54fd56 in doaa, doaab, doaae, doab).
This timer-based unlock was built directly into the cabinet’s system memory, rewarding operators who left their machines running for long periods. Once this time threshold was crossed, a flag was permanently enabled, making Raidou available on the character select screen without any additional input.

Dead or Alive used a modified Virtua Fighter 2 engine, with Tecmo’s own rendering and collision systems layered on top. It featured polygonal characters and 2D backgrounds enhanced by the Model 2’s texture-mapping capabilities, allowing smoother animation and faster movement compared to most 3D fighters of the time.

The gameplay revolved around a triangle system of strikes, throws, and holds, in which each action type could counter another,a design that gave the combat a rhythmic, reactive flow. Players could perform high, mid, and low counters, turning defense into a strategic weapon. Stages featured ropes or barriers that repelled characters when hit, amplifying damage and contributing to the game’s fast, explosive pacing.

The roster consisted of ten fighters by default, including Kasumi, Ryu Hayabusa, Jann Lee, Lei Fang, Tina, Bass, Zack, Bayman, Gen Fu, and Hayate (under his early alias).

In terms of presentation, this Model 2 game has displayed sharp, high-framerate visuals and distinctive character models that established the early aesthetic.
