The End Arcade
22At its core, The End is a horizontally fixed shooter. The player controls a small ship at the bottom of the screen, moving left or right and firing upward. Above the player sits a wall of small protective bricks. The enemy forces descend from a mothership at the top, diving toward the player not only with shots but also with a unique objective: they seize the bricks and attempt to carry them back up.
Every brick taken is locked into position at the top of the screen, gradually forming the phrase “END.”
Once that phrase is complete, the game is over instantly, regardless of how many lives remain. If a brick-carrying enemy is destroyed mid-flight, the stolen piece falls back into place, restoring the wall. This adds a defensive layer absent from most other shooters of the era.
Enemies spawn continuously from the mothership and attack in varied formations. Clearing a wave immediately triggers the next, with difficulty scaling as attacks grow faster and more coordinated. Score values vary by enemy type, with higher points awarded for more aggressive foes.
After two full loops of regular waves, the game changes pace. In the third loop, the mothership itself descends from the top and positions in the middle of the screen. This is a timed showdown: the player must strike the center of the mothership to destroy it. The faster it is destroyed, the more points are awarded.
This battle also has another crucial effect. Any bricks still intact at the end of the prior waves are tallied and subtracted from the cumulative pool of stolen pieces used to build the word “END.” In practical terms, this offers the player a lifeline: keeping more bricks safe before the mothership battle extends survival, since fewer letters are carried over into the next cycle.
In Chance Time, Shooting aliens & space ship will subtract bricks and play will continue.
