Synopsis
Setting
Set in the 26th century, the story follows engineer Isaac Clarke, a crewman on a repair vessel, the USS Kellion, assigned to the USG Ishimura, a massive planetary mining ship that has gone silent above the planet Aegis VII. His crew include computer specialist Kendra Daniels, chief security officer Zach Hammond, and co-pilots and security personnel Cpls. Hailey Johnston and Aiden Chen.[1]
While investigating a distress call sent by the ship's medical officer and Isaac's girlfriend, Nicole Brennan, the vessel's crew is attacked by mutated human corpses known as Necromorphs. Isaac is forced to fend for himself as he tries to save his surviving crewmates and learn the truth behind the loss of the Ishimura. Along the way, he encounters several survivors including Nicole, horticulturalist Elizabeth Cross, engineer and Cross's boyfriend Jacob Temple, Ishimura Chief Science Officer Terrence Kyne, and insane scientist Dr. Challus Mercer, the game's primary antagonist.[1][2][3]
Plot
The Kellion crew arrives at the outskirts of Aegis VII, but they crash-land aboard the Ishimura due to a docking malfunction. An injured Johnston stays behind as Isaac, Kendra, Hammond, and Chen investigate the seemingly abandoned ship. Necromorphs made from the corpses of the Ishimura's crew attack the group and kill Chen, forcing the team to separate. As the team battles the undead crew, the group investigates the Ishimura to repair its damages and to find out what caused the outbreak. Necromorphs cause the destruction of Kellion which kills Johnston, while a reanimated Chen is subdued by Hammond and ejected from the ship.
While exploring and repairing the ship, Isaac manages to reunite with Nicole and to meet Cross, who is finding Temple before planning to meet up with Isaac. Isaac also discovers the presence of the fanatical Church of Unitology and a large Red Marker, which caused psychosis and killings on Aegis VII and later aboard the Ishimura, ultimately causing the outbreak. Isaac, Kendra, and Hammond are also attacked by several hallucinations caused by the Marker. Isaac is hostile towards Unitology as his parents were killed by a murder-suicide orchestrated by his mother, a devout Unitologist; she was supposedly diagnosed as safe by Nicole, causing their relationship to be strained. Isaac encounters Mercer, who sends several experimental Necromorphs towards Isaac and aims to bring the Marker to Earth to spread the infection and cause a phenomenon he calls Convergence. Several logs show that Mercer, Kyne, and Nicole reluctantly worked together to study the Necromorphs at the onset of the outbreak, albeit with different end goals.
Another ship, the Valor, is contacted by the team but recovers the escape pod containing Chen, who causes another outbreak inside the ship that causes it to crash on the Ishimura's exterior. Isaac and Hammond board the Valor to retrieve its singularity core for their escape shuttle; the two realize that the Valor's true mission was to eliminate any survivors. Chen fatally wounds Hammond, who sacrifices himself by dragging him and his former ally to the overloaded core. Isaac retrieves the core and narrowly escapes the destruction of the Valor, where he encounters Kyne, who convinces Isaac and Kendra that they return the Marker to the planet to stop the outbreak. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/xxcodebreakerxxgamingxx
