Often called the “Forgotten War” a lot of the terrorism in the Philippines is tied to the island of Mindanao and the long running resistance of the Moro people to central government authority (dating back to the Spanish colonization). As Muslim-majority ethnic groups, the Moro (an umbrella term for several groups and clans) form the largest non-Christian population in the Philippines and comprise about 5% of the country's total population, or 5 million people and live on the western part of Mindanao. The modern conflict started in 1968 and large scale anti-insurgency campaigns lasted until 2019 when a peace deal was signed between the government and two major rebel groups and a sizeable chunk of the western part of the island was given greater autonomy but remained part of the Philippines. Smaller groups continue their resistance and deadly attacks.
