Death, Soul & Robots contained a substantial amount of nostalgia. The cat protagonist, the slightly off-kilter pixel art that never quite comes together, and the level layouts reminded us of Bubsy the Bobcat, and we cursed our SEGA Megadrive as we repeatedly perished. Death, Soul & Robots contains mentions of Bubsy, although they are not particularly our fondest memories.

A touch of Metroidvania is used to modernize things marginally. The world of Death, Soul & Robots (likely a reference to the Netflix series Love, Death & Robots) is a reasonably large and open 2D space where a dearth of abilities impedes progress. Before you can past helpful signposts, you must locate a specific weapon or ability, and a large portion of the adventure consists of figuring out where the hell to go.
