[Deathsmiles II/デススマイルズII] X Follett Level 3 TLB ALL Clear (Score: 3,380,822,849) [CC Commentary]
IIX is probably the best iteration of Deathsmiles II. It has the rank select back, lock on uses a different resource, let's call it MP, and also a TLB! The game is also widescreen HD. Many patterns are also rebalanced to be fairer in general. But it's not without criticisms.
Let's start with the stuff that are shared between its iterations. Like the previous game, you can shoot and focus shot left and right. You can bomb too. You can lock on shot, which actually works more like Raystorm than a Ketsui-lock shot from the previous game... which means it introduces shot landing delay! Not that dangerous, but keep that in mind. The lock shot also works against aerial enemies, not only the ones on the background. Since the resource is now a separate one, this attack is now pretty ideal for scoring! You can even do lock on in Power Up mode like in the 1st game!
This game is also a Hyper Moder. Fill up the power up gauge, then you go powered up, like in DaiOuJou. It's the usual power up like before, but in this game refilling the power up is much, much easier! Especially in X. Quick recharge in Deathsmiles II is an important technique. The pointblank zone here compared to Arcade is very comfortable. Nice!
The power up cycle is also better! The game has a simple rank system: If your Power Gauge is at max, blockable counter bullets get shot out by popcorns. Blocking the bullets won't decrease the power up gauge anymore, so no worries!
The not-so-good thing is, as satisfying as it is when you get used to it, is the power up counter bullets. When you're in Power Up, enemies will shoot out either the homing blue shots, that can be cleared out by going lock on. Lock on too long, you will be assaulted with the yellow ones. The juggling is annoying! You need to shoot, stop, shoot, stop. I just don't like the flow. It's a great dopamine spectacle when on Level 3, though. It's worth it, I guess.
For the TLB it's perhaps one of the easiest TLBs CAVE have. To be honest, the hardest part of the TLBs are usually the requirements, not the TLBs themselves :P. When fighting the TLB, you get 2 life recoveries. That's 6 free bombs. Also the TLB is not immune to any bombs. Even at Level 3! Arguably easier than Satan Claws too because of this reason. So, how to get to the TLB and get the Sakura ending? Simple: Regardless of the Level (Level 1 is even fine?) you must finish off all the bosses including EX and Satan Claws with the lock on shot. Doesn't have to include the phase changes, just their very last hit. That's easier said than done, of course. The process is fun! But man, this is where "Just a couple more shots!" cue is needed. CAVE?
IIX is probably regarded as the definitive version of Deathsmiles II. Fully voice acted too. Give it a try, even if it's just to see all the endings! Don't worry, from all of the 13 endings only the Sakura (TLB) ending requires 1cc :P
Oh, extra commentary about Follett. Follett's DPS is OBSCENE! Follett is probably the easiest character to use to get the TLB clear.
