It had hit me that maybe this setup is deliberately done so the player might try doing it, only to fall victim to the multiple different ways the squad could be shot at scattered around the bunker. Doesn't stop it from feeling lame once you've disarmed all of them and used the counter implement only to see it falling flat.

Who knows, maybe it's actually unintended. Mods are kinda infamous for being poorly betatested sometimes, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's why Bertgold is so cheap in various core gameplay designs sometimes.
