Demon's Souls - Part 3
I picked up Demon's Souls off the back of buying my PS5, and that everyone told me I absolutely had to play a Souls game at some point. I'd tried Bloodborne, gave up after about 10 minutes and never looked back, but the trailer for this looked pretty mint - I remember the cashier at Game jokingly asking me "Do you hate yourself that much?" - but I liked it on first impressions. Eventually the difficulty spiked, I didn't allocate stats well... and FFVII Remake Intergrade came out. Later, I'd do my first run of Dark Souls, and this swayed me. to go back to the foundation of the series.
Graphically, Demon's Souls is utterly stunning. Bluepoint games have lovingly recreated this 2009 classic and it's varying enviornments and it was possibly the best early showcase of what next gen consoles can be capable of - character models are sharp and full of expression, puddles and swamps ripple, flames and mist are as realistic as videogames can get, and it brings the game and it's varying environments to life. Something I also look for in a game is it's soundtrack, and this delivers a perfect accompaniment to epic battles whether the sinister Armour Spider or the tragic battle against Maiden Astraea. Sony have outdone themselves with these rearrangements of the flat originals.
The game itself is notably more difficult than Dark Souls, outside of some gimmick bosses that seem to draw ire of the Soulsborne community (though I welcomed the variety, and it was clearly good enough to lift some of the encounters for future souls games). There are archstones instead of bonfires and they're less frequent. Grinding is a necessity or it is unlikely you'll see the other end of other battles. It's intense, occasionally unfair and will punish you into getting good or giving up. Instead of open world, there are 5 areas with unique enemies and environments (though again some were lifted and used in Dark Souls - most notably the Valley of Defilement and Blight Town, ew.) - and no matter how you've built your character, you'll find a disadvantage in at least one area. For those who fancy further punishment, then online mode and new game plus is there too.
You will die, you will rage, and you will feel utterly hard done by... but that's okay. It's a Souls game.... and a damn good one.
