Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII - Part 2
The most surprising thing about this game? I didn't hate it. For years, I've heard that this game is utter dogshit, and it looked from the first couple of chapters that they may be right. So, you play Vincent Valentine (my least favourite FFVII party member) as he investigates the terrorist organisation Deepground and their elite Tsviets force - a remnant of Shinra's experiments for the perfect super SOLDIER. You will meet characters, old and new in this story that centres around Vincent's control of his inner beast Chaos and his fight against the evil Weiss who seeks to activate Omega Weapon (who threatens the planet and it's inhabitants, yadayada).
The game was originally released at the same time as the PlayStation 3 so I never really bothered, but in terms of cutscenes and graphics it pushed the PS2 - much the same as other Square Enix titles. The game itself, is an adequate action RPG meeting 3rd person shooters - and handles like a Devil May Cry clone - albeit a little clumsy. You can upgrade your weapons and levels by harvesting gil and EXP - and customize weapons to deliver progressively harder blows - your rank can be increased by beating side challenges - and it plays for a generous 11 hours, which I felt was about right. There's a couple of bangers in the soundtrack.
The story is alright, and I only really played this now with Rebirth on the horizon - but I feel I've taken on enough lore to know who some of the characters will be. But Christ, the story is too bloated and scenes are unnecessarily dragged out - sometimes painfully, thanks to the half assed voice cast - and who invited the guy who played Hojo? Absolutely awful cheddar. All in all though, a much more enjoyable romp than Crisis Core.
