Desk of Ladyada - Yaaar it's a Bus Pyrate!
We recently sold out of our stock of Bus Pirates (https://github.com/BusPirate/Bus_Pirate) and when we booked a reorder we found it's currently unavailable with no ETA for re-stocking. it made us think about revisiting this design, perhaps using an RP2040 instead: with native USB and CircuitPython and PIO it might be easier to add new protocols! we did do a "Circuit Pyrate" draft many years ago but it was based on the SAMD21 and we quickly ran out of SRAM - another thing the RP2040 would excel at. Let's take a look at this PCB design to see what design decisions we made when 'porting' over a product from over 10 years ago!
The Great Search - Analog Switches & Multiplexers

A super fun chip to have in your toolkit is an analog switch or multiplexer (mux) - which can act like an SPST but doesn't require a mechanical switch. There's a few things to watch out for but these are very handy when you want to move analog signals around. The Bus Pyrate design we were working on uses a 4066 in TSSOP - let's find a chip that we can use in this design but also poke around at some other analog switches and muxes that are available on Digi-Key!
