XFCE Desktop Environment started out in 1996 as an Open Source alternative to CDE (Common Desktop Environment). Happily it has progressed and evolved since, and does have a fresh modern feel.
XFCE is available for many different Linux Distros, and comes as the default desktop for Xubuntu, SolydXK, and Linux Lite
