Cinnamon started life in 2011 with Linux Mint’s refusal to use either Unity or Gnome Shell. Unlike MATE they moved straight to GTK 3, but forked all the Gnome apps in order to keep the traditional look and feel.
Cinnamon is primarily used in Linux Mint, but can be installed in other Linux distros, e.g. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, Slackware, and Arch.
