I’m writing this the day before Destiny 2’s big expansion, Forsaken, launches. Along with a shitload of new content in the form of story, raid content, and new gear we’re also getting a new gamemode- something that hasn’t happened very much in Destiny 2, likely because they’ve been focusing on fixing a bunch of other problems the game has.
And we could totally talk about all the changes that dropped into D2 this last week, or how hype I am for Forsaken to launch, but instead we’re gonna talk about Gambit- the PvP/PvE hybrid gamemode that we got to play for 24 hours this last Saturday, the 1st of September 2018.
I’m a sucker for genre hybridization- I love when a game lists itself as one thing but pulls in heavily from another. Destiny kinda does that, on the surface, a little bit. It’s teeechnically a shooter/RPG, and it has a bunch of MMO systems like raids, an evolving end-game, and character classes with different playstyles, but it’s always had a very solid divide between its Player-Versus-Player and its Player-Versus-Environment content.
You don’t have to worry about other players kickin’ your ass in raids, and when you’re balls-deep in the competitive playlist you don’t need to check your corners for Big Boss Bois as you try to defuse a detonation charge.
You’re either fightin’ players, or you’re fightin’ AI. No middle ground.
Gambit says “nah fuck that” and tosses PvP and PvE into a blender, making a delicious smoothie consisting of the best of both worlds. It’s got something for everyone, and even though it’s technically listed under the “competitive” playlist, it’s perfectly suited to casual play and even though you’re gonna be fighting other players, it’s not something you’re doing the entire match.
It uses PvP elements as a pacing mechanism to boost the intensity of any given round a few times before it closes out, and it uses the PvE elements in a way that ensures you can always make a comeback- even if your team is shitting the bed the first half of the game, you can still turn things around for a satisfying, sweaty victory.
