DFFOO JP - Freya Crescent is the Fifth Arch Fiend! Maxed Golbez Showcase with FR featuring Freya!
6We still have a while to wait until Freya's own FR/BT I'm sure, but in the meantime, this was a lovely surprise to tide Freya enjoyers over!
Golbez admittedly was not a character that I had previously considered as a potential candidate for an FR partnership with Freya, but in hindsight, it make sense. The official reasons given for the pairing were that they both summon dragons while fighting, and they both have their personal stories driven by a tragic loss. Golbez loses his mother who dies giving birth to Cecil, which causes Golbez to hate Cecil for a moment and allows Zemus to harness that hatred to brainwash him, making him the main antagonist for most of FFIV. Freya starts her personal journey after her boyfriend, Sir Fratley, leaves Burmecia to train and grow stronger, but never returns despite promising her he would. Freya searches for him for three years but upon finally reuniting with him, discovers he has unrecoverable amnesia and has no memory of her or their time together.
If I had to add some personal interpretations, Golbez, under Zemus' influence, became a warlock that caused a lot of suffering and destruction, while Freya was on the receiving end of the crimes of another warlock (Queen Brahne, and Kuja behind the scenes), so there is a juxtaposition with the two of them there. Golbez and Freya both feel a need to atone for their past in some way as well. Golbez for obvious reasons being the main antagonist for most of FFIV, but Freya because her decision to leave Burmecia in search of Fratley led to her being exiled and because of this, she was not present for when Queen Brahne's attack on Burmecia started, meaning she could only show up during the aftermath when most of the citizens had either been killed or evacuated and the city already in ruins.
I happen to like Golbez quite a bit as a character, so I am very happy with Freya showing up with his FR, I tend to dig these surprising choices for the FR pairings especially when they still make a lot of sense. It shows that the devs put thought into some of these pairings. I'm actually a little disappointed that Golbez was relegated to being a random campaign banner though, it would have been nice to see him get an Intertwined Wills that featured him forming a friendship with Freya.
As for the Golbez rework, he got treated very well, he is probably the AoE damage king right now. His FR is easy to use since you just have to hit elemental weakness damage and do dark damage, but he imperils the enemy with Dark Imperil already, and his FR provides party Dark Enchant while it's active. His FR also provides 50% HP Damage and HP Damage Limit Up to the party while hitting that dark weakness damage, so you get a total of 80% for the party out of just Golbez when using his FR. Golbez also gets an additional 70% HP Damage Limit Up from his BT effect for himself, making the total he generates for himself a whopping 200% when using his own FR with his BT effect! At that point, he actually can start to come close to Astos' ridiculous numbers per HP hit. The fact that Golbez's BT still provides that BRV Freeze aura is also a nice touch that will make him easy to slot into teams, they also extended the duration of the BT effect to 6 turns so he can use a full Burst phase with his BT effect active.
I used Shantotto IW for the showcase simply because the Golbez can cancel the Force Time there with his FR. But hey, 9 million score is a good endorsement for him!
