1) At level 1, take and equip a weapon from a follower.
2) Powerlevel in Halls of Agony Level 3 on Normal/Hard Difficulty for max efficiency, or do bounties if you want variety
3) At level 45, craft lvl 60 weapons and get -15 level req on them
4) At level 60, craft lvl 70 weapons and get -10 level req on them
5) At level 70, start doing bounties in normal mode. Then do a rift on Torment 1, to get a greater rift key.
6) Start doing greater rifts, leave them and make sure you always have 4:30 min or less left until you kill the rift guardian. Do bounties while you are waiting for the greater rift to expire! This will increase the greater rift level by 1 each time and get you all legendary gems really fast.
