Diablo IV | Act 3: Rising Tension
0Hope you didn't miss the old hellfire and brimstone too much last week, lovely viewers. I'm back... and boy, did the title I chose for this session prove to be the truth! I was pretty tired from a busy day overall, and focused mainly on character building after a great session zero for the D&D 5e group I'm joining, so I knew I'd have to struggle hard with my patience for Blizzard's plot pacing. I'm so very glad that Sol and Sagi decided to join me for this one... because past a certain point, I can't NOT get salty. Congratulations to D4 for finally finding the edge of my patience and stepping over it.
Pushing the plot past Act III instead of telling a proper story in three acts was bad enough, but then they brought back some of the characters I found the most annoying and senseless from prior acts... with the same questionable level of depth and interiority as they had to begin with. As of last time, I was pretty much ready to own up to playing this game for the gameplay and the chance to play with friends, but now I'm absolutely there. A few decent moments isn't enough to salvage a story that thinks I'm as brainless as the NPCs and motivated solely by graphic depictions of gore and violence. (I don't mind these things when they're used to make a point. There ain't one here.)
So yeah. Kindly expect some extra salt in this session, and likely more of it going forward. If Diablo is your favorite game and you love Blizzard titles, then more power to you, enjoy the ride... but the only way I'm getting through this is by being honest about how much I hate it. The era of Blizzard being a leader in storytelling has long since expired (if it ever existed) and I'm both disappointed and embarrassed about that fact. But we WILL see this through to its conclusion, even if I have to get dragged kicking and screaming.
It's a shame, really. At least Elden Ring had a good story, even if I couldn't actually play the thing. Maybe I should have stayed with that instead.
