There was originally a subplot that involved Charlotte confessing to Esther that she had given birth to a son, and she had given him up for adoption. Later, she finds out that the boy drowned at the age of seven while he was trapped underneath a frozen lake. Later, Charlotte hears noises while she’s laying in bed, and she holds a light up to see the shadow of a boy clawing at the ice on the wall. The scenes were filmed, but they were eventually deemed to be unnecessary and were cut. Also, when Charlotte shows Mr. Mullins her picture from Bolivia, Valak from The Nun can be seen in the shadows in the background.
