Buddy’s interactions with people on the streets were real! During the last days of filming, Will Ferrell’s improvisation skills were put to the test as director Jon Favreau decided to take nothing but cameras out to the streets of New York to get some real interactions. They would drive around in a white van, hand money to people and get to shoot some impromptu scenes such as Buddy getting his shoes shined or Buddy crossing the street with real people around him, no extras in sight. Will would stay in character, even when some of the strangers were less than accommodating, notably the man he mistakes for Santa.
