Matt Damon was excluded from boot camp for a specific reason! Steven Spielberg wanted to take a realistic approach to the movie and so he sent his main actors to a bootcamp run by a 21 year military veteran for a week. Spielberg didn’t send Matt Damon as he wanted the cast to build up a resentment to him that would translate on the screen when it came to filming. According to Damon it worked, and the fact his co-stars were training in mud and horrible conditions while he was enjoying bubble baths definitely helped that resentment play with the characters.
