In this video I discuss the difference between adaptive personality and personality disorder criteria beyond the diagnostic criteria (the set of signs, symptoms, and tests used to guide the care of individual patients). There is more to the identification of a personality disorder than just DSM-5 criteria.
The 5 distinguishing characteristics are:
1) Ego-syntonic to maladaptive behaviors
2) Is the behavior pervasive?
3) External locus of control
4) Enduring maladaptive behavior
5) Inflexibility across contexts
More people only have some of these characteristics, which indicates traits, whereas those with a personality disorder have ALL five.
