In today's episode (Ep 4), we are digging straight down and hope to not die. We don't recommend digging straight down, but sometimes you can find some pretty good stuff by digging straight down. We find some iron ore and we also wind some good stuff that's not iron ore in a cave system at the bottom of the hole.
There are risks to digging straight down. When digging straight down, you might hit a very tall cave and fall to your death. Lava is also of great concern if you're digging straight down.
If do you manage to stay safe while digging straight down, then you have to worry about how to get back up. Ladders are handy to have when you're digging straight down. Another thing that can help you get back to the surface after digging straight down is a good set of tools. You can pick/shovel a diagonal shaft back up to the surface if needed. If you don't have ladders or tools, you're going to regret digging straight down.
There are benefits to digging straight down, however. First of all, digging straight down is the quickest way to get to bedrock. You might also run into valuable ores while digging straight down. We hit a vein of iron ore in this video by digging straight down a little ways, and we hit another vein of iron ore after digging straight down some more! We love to find iron ore early in the game, and we certainly did find iron ore today.
Is digging straight down the BEST way to find iron ore? Certainly not. While the EASIEST way to find iron ore is to wander around and hope to find iron ore exposed on a cliff side, that's relatively rare. A more practical way to find iron ore is to spot a natural cave opening on the surface and go exploring. It still isn't EASY to find iron ore, though. You should prepare supplies if you want to find iron ore by caving. You'll need torches to find iron ore this way. You'll want a stone sword if you want to find iron ore by caving. Don't get lost in your quest to find iron ore!
What can you do once you find iron ore? Well, lots of things! Your quest isn't over once you find iron ore. You'll want to use a furnace for smelting after you find iron ore so you can make better tools, weapons and armor. These are the benefits you can get when you find iron ore!
What else can you find by digging straight down? Gold? Redstone? Lapis Lazuli? Diamonds? Emeralds? Those are all possible, but not too likely. The Basement does not recommend digging straight down.
Please note: Digging straight down is NOT the best way to find iron ore. Also, digging straight down isn't a good idea in general. We don't recommend digging straight down, as digging straight down is very dangerous. Don't be so desperate to find iron ore that you do risky things. While it is great to find iron ore, a little patience is needed to find iron ore early in the game. Just relax, focus on survival, and you'll find iron ore soon enough.
When you do find iron ore, it'll feel good to upgrade your tools/weapons/armor. But these upgrades aren't day one upgrades, so don't be too urgent to find iron ore.
