The opening section of the game is fairly straightforward, just do the tutorial fight and then train in the gym till you have rookies before exploring. Koromon in Jijimon's house will give good items every day and Tanemon will give food each day. After every couple of training sessions, go outside the gym for a chance to appear where you can praise your digimon. This can increase happiness and give you clues for some of the digivolution requirements. If you level up your tamer level, be sure to pick the Defense Order and High Defense Order. After that, you can do what you want. Increasing Life Span, Carrying Capacity, and Digivolution Statboost are good ones to have.

HP = Health
MP = Magic Points
Strength = Damage Output
Stamina = Defense & Material Capacity
Speed = How often you attack and move (can result into dodging enemy attacks) during battle
Wisdom = Increases the chance of guarding, reduces MP-usage, increases critical hit rate

Once you get rookie digimon you can start exploring, Patamon awaits just outside the city as your first recruitable digimon.
Further in the Nigh Plains you'll find Tentomon who will sell a single recovery item for 100 bits and Palmon who requests 3 items. Pay Tentomon and find those 3 items and both will join the city respectively. You'll also find Biyomon close by but she won't join till you recruit another digimon down the road.
To the south you'll find Power Plant #2, carefully dodge the goburimon (or numemon when it's getting late) and talk to Kuwagamon. You'll find the item he requests in the forest path at the northeastern exit of the Nigh Plains. There you'll be able to recruit another 2 digimon as well. Be careful of the Red Veggiemon, it's too soon to fight them. Talk to Wormmon and suggest making a fishing rod. Both Wormmon and Kuwagamon's item spawn in the same place so pick it up. Numemon will request 5 green digistalks, once you give it a battle will start. Beat him and he'll join the city, Wormmon, and Kuwagamon will join once you give them their respective items. Be sure to pick up materials along the way, you'll need it for later in the game.

Patapon: Warehouse to store items
Tentomon: Opens an Item Shop
Palmon: Upgrades the Farm
Kuwagamon: Gives 1 training boosting item every evening
Wormmon: Gives you a Fishing Rod
Numemon: Gives you 1 Portable Potty

For now, the gym is the easiest way to increase stats, so either dedicate time to it or do it in between your exploration sessions. Fights outside the city are a good way to get some money and items, later it'll also become the optimal way to train but for now, stick to increasing stats in the gym.
