Digital mapping of the Japanese islands enabled the discovery of around 7,000 new islands.

According to media reports, the Japanese Geographical Information Agency, using the digital mapping method, determined a total of 14 thousand, 125 islands as a result of the census

The government body, which will announce its findings in the next few weeks, said the new information is unlikely to change, the size of Japan's territory or territorial waters
