You're a cop, waking up in a trashed hotel room after a 3-day bender. No, you're not Hunter S. Thompson, but I wouldn't be surprised if his writing was an influence. One criticism I often hear of a lot of narratively rich games is that the combat often gets in the way. It's certainly the case for a game like Planescape: Torment. In all my time with Disco Elysium, I didn't get into one RPG battle. The game is more cerebral. Your upgrade system is based on personality traits. You can be knowledgeable about the world, you can read people and latch onto abstract ideas, or you can be a heavy who speaks with his fists. In my 2 hours I only scratched the surface of what's going on in this town, but its characters, and the possibilities to approach the game's challenges from other character builds, promoting more than one play through the game delighted me.
