Disturbing Video Game Music 77: Engraved Time - Folklore
Alongside Psychonauts and Klonoa, Folklore is a poster child for overlooked video games. The game is a unique mix of Kingdom Hearts like action combined with monster catching not unlike that in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner. In the game you play as two separate characters, Ellen and Keats, whose fates eventually intertwine as they explore the world of fairies; making both friends and enemies in both the realm of fairies and the local village. The game is especially notable for having some of the most accurate representations of fairies and spirits from old European folklore with few creative liberties taken.
Each of the game's major dungeons is based off one of the many conflicting ways humans feel about death. In the case of the Endless Corridors, the resignation and dread of the fact that no matter what happens: you can NEVER escape death and any way you try to avoid it is just buying extra time before you pass on. The dungeon's theme perfectly captures what the Endless Corridors represent, clocks are put to good use and the song sounds downright oppressive at some points while also having an almost relaxing and hopeful feel at some points as if to remind us death isn't necessarily a bad thing.
