D.Lux plays..Brave Battle Saga:Legend of the Magic Warrior (Genesis/1996):Part 1.
Hello all and welcome to my newest play through.
This game I first became aware of from the gaming website HG101 sometime ago when I was looking into obscure RPGs for the sega genesis and this curious title peeked my interest.
Very reminiscent of early SNES Final Fantasy/Breath of Fire games in terms of game play, style and presentation, the development of this game and how it came to Western Sega gaming shores, has a very (at least I think) fascinating backstory.
Brave Battle Saga: The Legend of the Magic Warrior was developed and published in 1996 by Taiwanese company Chaunpu for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Chaunpu also developed and published many other unlicensed Sega mega drive games during the mid 90s, primarily RPGs before gradually moving into the movie production business in the early 2000s. Initially first released only in Taiwan under its original Taiwanese title of "Tai Kong Zhan Shi-Mo Fa Shan Shi" which loosely translates into English as "The Space Warrior-The Magic Warrior"the game was then ported to the Russian Sega gaming market by some very enterprising Chinese gaming pirates. While in Russia, the game went through some changes. The title was changed to "Braver Battle Saga:Final Fantasy" and the battle music theme from the Taiwanese version was changed to the victory music in the Russian version.
Nearly a decade later, in 2010, the game found its way to Western shores and was given a fan translation into English and again renamed to the games current title so as to avoid confusion (you know, with that other well known Nintendo rpg game...). For a long time, the game was never given a physical release, until in 2018 when game publishers Piko Interactive released it as a physical Sega mega drive cartridge, retro mega drive gaming case, instruction booklet in all.
As mentioned earlier, game play wise, the game has been compared to early SNES era RPGS especially Final Fantasy 4 and Breath of Fire (its funny even this games hero has blue hair) with its real time battle combat, character leveling, use of summon spells etc. An interesting feature of this game is that rather than learning new magic spells when a certain character gains a level up like in most rpgs, players have to purchase spells from magic shops found in various towns or can find them in various treasure chests.
The game opens with a text crawl about how long ago there was a great war between man and demons that nearly tore apart the world. Man triumphed and banished the demons to the underworld. The remaining survivors went about rebuilding the world and from that four great kingdoms arose: Cruz, Gallen, Zak and Lear. Later on, a quick cut scene of a girl speaking to a king about some impending evil about to be released happens, saying the time for action against the dark forces is now...
Cut away to another scene of a small village where a young boy named Tim is getting ready for a special village festival to find a new magic warrior. After Tim gets ready, he joins the other potential warrior candidates at the town square where the village elder gives them all the task of finding the Teardrop of the Holy Tree in the Azure Forest. First one to find it and bring it back, becomes the new magic warrior. The Elder starts the race and everyone rushes off..
A simple enough task...what could possibly go wrong?.
