Do Young Earth Creationists Require Accelerated Nuclear Decay? | Debunking Dating Duds!
84Do Young Earth Creationists require accelerated nuclear decay at the flood to explain the radioactive age estimates for rocks in the geologic record? Or is there an alternative explanation for what we see?
What is the origin of radioactivity? And why do deeper rocks date older than later rocks (closer to the top or rocks produced later in the flood - rather than earlier) in the geologic record? Multiple working hypotheses in model building is important - especially when it comes to historical science (dealing with the past and events that are not necessarily directly testable or observable). These questions and more are addressed in this important video on dating methods and radioactivity.
3 major reasons why dating methods are unreliable:
"1 - There are uncertainties as to the absence or presence of daughter atoms (atoms left after decay) when the rocks formed, because there is much evidence of the rocks having inherited daughter atoms that were not formed by radioactive decay in those rocks.
2 - There is abundant evidence of widespread “open-system” behavior of parent and daughter atoms. Rocks are often contaminated with extra parent and daughter atoms produced apart from radioactive decay. Parent and daughter atoms are also removed by various geologic processes (for example, leaching by fluids) subsequent to the rocks forming.
3 - Nuclear decay rates have now been demonstrated to have not always been constant."

There exists strong evidence indicating that nuclear decay rates are not constant, and can be affected by factors such as heat and pressure. Even in light of the evidence against the assumption behind constant decay rates, do Young Earth Creationists require 100+ million years worth of decay (at today's rates) during the Flood year? Critics of Biblical Creation frequently point to the excess heat and radiation that would be produced as a biproduct of this level of accelerated decay. Critics (and even YEC's) claim the heat and radiation generated through accelerated nuclear decay over a short period of time (the year-long Flood event) would be enough to melt granite many times over to the point of vaporizing it. It is also argued that the excess radiation produces by these accelerated processes would make it impossible for Noah, his family, and the Ark animals to survive. The question still remains: is there an alternative explanation that is consistent with observational and historical scientific data that avoids major heat-budget issues - the heat-budget issues associated with accelerated nuclear decay? The answer is yes! And this video provides the viewers with that answer.
A Flood model with no heat and radiation issues due to accelerated decay only has to explain how the heat created through the catastrophic processes during the worldwide flood event was removed or utilized. This includes the plate movements, meteor impacts, and the ripple effects of the fountains of the deep breaking open.
