Socioeconomic and Pedagogical Factors Influencing Home Language Skills: A Study of the Secondary School Improvement Program (SSIP) Grade 12 Leaners in Gauteng's Johannesburg East District

Layman Abstract :
This study looked at how well the Secondary School Improvement Program (SSIP) is helping Grade 12 students in Johannesburg East improve their home language skills—like listening, speaking, reading, and writing—in languages such as Setswana, IsiZulu, Sesotho, Sepedi, isiXhosa, and isiVhenda. Using surveys and interviews, the research found that students’ performance varied based on teaching styles, available resources, and social conditions. The study suggests that students would benefit more if schools used more learning materials and tailored teaching methods to better support each learner. This would help SSIP have a stronger impact on student success in home languages.
