THANK YOU to Clara from Sandbox for the free copy! I've been watching Star Renegades for a good while now, so to have so many people recommend I be chosen for the key is something I appreciate immensly!
Star Renegades caught my eye when it was advertised as a 'rougelike RPG with 2D graphics' which is literally 95% of what I play, so it was an instant sell. This vod is the Early Access preview from released embargo of 9/7/2020. We explored the systems and galaxies to get an idea of core gameplay,mechanics, and team comp. I DID misspeak on stream when I said parties are limited to 3 when they in fact can go up to 6! And you unlock characters via natural progressions and friendship building in the game.
It takes the traditional RPG style of combat, while adding the camping system a la Darkest Dungeon, where your characters get 'cards' to determine skills, and combat is conducted on an easy to navigate and predict timeline to allow you a chance to plot and react to enemy moves, down to seeing what move they'll do and who they're targetting. You can choose what routes you want to go, but with some limitations-you won't have time or moves to do EVERYTHING so you have to chose your fights wisely!
In the event you lose/die, your guide to saving the universe, J5T1N, will deem this timeline a lost cause....and simply bamf you to a new one, where you can start your adventure over. However, generals and bosses that defeat you will level up similar to the Nemesis system in Shadow of Modor/War. Too many losses and you'll have some tough endgame on hand! But keep the wins strong, and maybe, just maybe, you can save the galaxy!.....well, this version, at least.
It's a really fun, and frankly pretty chill game. I recommend it!
